Former NFL Star Named to National Small Business Association Leadership Council
Indianapolis Colts great Robert Mathis to champion interests of small businesses

Former Indianapolis Colts defensive end and Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist Robert Mathis has been named to the National Small Business Association (NSBA) Leadership Council.

The NSBA is the nation’s oldest small-business advocacy organization. It provides valuable networking between small-business advocates from across the country while ensuring small business a seat at the table as Congress and regulators take up key proposals.

The Leadership Council works alongside other small-business advocates from across the country as they work to promote the interests of small business to policymakers in Washington, D.C.

“The NSBA is proud to have football great Robert Mathis join our Leadership Council,” said Todd McCracken, the association’s president and CEO. “Having won a Super Bowl, Robert is well-prepared to champion the importance of small business leadership, making their voices heard nationally.”

“I’m humbled to become part of the winning team of the NSBA Leadership Council,” Mathis said.

Along with NFL veteran Daniel Muir, Mathis operates the Indianapolis-based The Original Gridiron Gang, the premier football development program in the Midwest and the non-profit The Gridiron Gang Foundation. The Original Gridiron Gang provides year-round football position training for youth, collegiate, and professionals on and off the field through football development, nutrition planning, mental health and more.

In addition, The Gridiron Gang Foundation creates a lasting impact on communities by developing all-around athletes through pillars for change. In 2021, The Gridiron Gang Foundation raised over $1 million and provided 300 scholarships for youth football development.

In November, Mathis was inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor. A graduate of the Historically Black College and University Alabama A&M University, Mathis was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2019. He is currently a semi-finalist for the 2022 NFL Hall of Fame.

Mathis finished his career ranked 19th in league history with 123 sacks and his 52 forced fumbles are an NFL record. He was named to six consecutive Pro Bowls (2008-2013) and was voted a 2013 Associated Press and Sporting News First Team NFL All-Pro selection. In 2013, Mathis won the inaugural Deacon Jones Award as the NFL’s sack leader with 19.5.

Mathis is the Colts’ all-time sacks leader and played 14 seasons (2003-2016) with the franchise after being selected by the team in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He was a member of the Colts’ Super Bowl XLI-winning team.

Mathis looks forward to expanding his business acumen into the blockchain industry and assisting corporations with developing their non-fungible token (NFT) projects.
