Coronary Stent: Overview
Coronary stents are expandable tubular metallic devices that can be used to clear congested arteries in patients with underlying atherosclerosis. After the stent is inserted, the revascularization process is also known as percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary angioplasty.
Different types of Coronary Stents
Bare-Metal Stents
Bare metal stents are made of tiny mesh wired tubes that allow the clogged artery to be widened but do not include a polymer or drugs coating to help prevent re-blockage of the arteries. Patients who are allergic to specific polymers or who do not require drugs eluted from drug eluting stents can benefit from these stents.
Drug-Eluting Stents
When the arteries are about to re-block, a drug-eluting stent is a bare-metal stent with a polymer covering that allows for the progressive release of drugs over a period of time. Drug-eluting stents help to reduce the odds of a repeat arterial blockage. These further are of two types: Permanent Polymer Drug-Eluting Stent and Bioresorbable Polymer Drug-Eluting Stent.
